Just about an hour’s drive from Virginia Beach, Williamsburg is an excellent destination for class trips.

Colonial Williamsburg

Colonial Williamsburg is the “world’s largest living history museum.”  As you step onto the gravel roadways, you are stepping back in time to the 18th century.  During this time, visit the apothecary, talk to the artisans and craftsman of the era, and engage in political discussions relevant to the day as the colonists debate a war of independence. It’s an experience you won’t soon forget (especially if you manage to land in the stocks!!)

Jamestown

The historic Jamestown Settlement provides a glimpse into the lives of settlers in the first permanent English settlement in America, as well as their Native American counterparts.  Visit a replica of one of the three ships that sailed from England to Virginia in 1607.  Likewise, you can explore the colonists’ fort or visit a Powhatan Indian Village.

Busch Gardens

The World’s Most Beautiful Theme Park is also a great time for students!  Busch Gardens and Water Country USA offer thrills and entertainment in a spectacular wooded setting.  It’s also a perfect spot for performance groups.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not!

Ripley’s Believe It or Not® boasts an astonishing collection originating from the private coffers of Robert Ripley (1890-1949).  Ripley spent 35 years traveling to 201 countries seeking “the odd, the unusual, and the unexplained.” Students will have a great time exploring his treasures.

Berkeley Plantation

Just a 45-minute ride from Williamsburg is a 1726 mansion steeped in American history.  It’s the home of Benjamin Harrison V, signer of the Declaration of Independence and three-time governor of Virginia.  It’s also the birthplace of William Henry Harrison, 9th president of the United States. Guided tours are available daily, as well as self-guided grounds tours.
